Amodei Report

Last week, I was home in Nevada to hear from you and other constituents. While I was back for the October district work period, I also met with federal agencies and local organizations to gather important updates before returning to Washington.

Below are some highlights from my recent travels:

I started off my week with the Incline Village General Improvement District. We had a productive discussion about upcoming projects, the concerns surrounding those initiatives, and plans for moving forward. Thanks for meeting with me.

I then spent some time in Reno where one of my meetings was with the BLM State Office. We focused on the status of a number of local projects and possible solutions to known issues affecting the area and other parts of Northern Nevada. I will continue to work closely with the BLM, both nationally and regionally, to hold the agency accountable and ensure these lands are protected for Nevadans.
Finally, I ended the week by addressing business leaders at the Las Vegas Metro ChamberEggs & Issues Breakfast. I provided a Washington Update on several issues we’re currently working on in the House, some of those being: Yucca Mountain, health care, and tax reform. Keep reading to learn more about each of these issues.

Washington Wrap-Up
With three working weeks left before Congress breaks for the November district work period, I wanted to provide an update on some of the issues that remain that the top of our agenda in the House.
Tax Reform
On Thursday, the House agreed to the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 budget resolution that passed out of the Senate on October 19.  The successful passage of this budget resolution in both chambers officially means Congress can move forward with comprehensive tax reform through the reconciliation process.
You might be interested to know that the House Ways and Means Committee plans to release its version of a bill to reform our nation's tax system in the coming weeks. I’m sure you have questions and are looking for specifics about the bill, so I will be sure to share those with you once we know more. I would also like to share information that has been prepared specifically for CD-2, illustrating how our current tax code impacts Northern Nevadans:

Health Care Watch
Even though all eyes will be on tax reform for the next several weeks, health care still remains one of our top priorities. There is still much work that needs to be done to reform certain aspects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as premiums for some of the most popular ACA plans are expected to spike next year. We expect health care to take center stage again after the first of the year, so I’ve continued to work with my staff to gather data and meet with relevant stakeholders in Nevada as well as lawmakers in Washington.
If you missed my latest health care update on Community Health Centers, or any of my other health care updates, you can get caught up by clicking here.
Infrastructure
In regards to infrastructure, my staff and I continue to interact with the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the White House, and congressional leadership regarding several of the issues presented at the Western Nevada Infrastructure Roundtable Summit hosted by my office in August. The discussion specifically focused on the infrastructure needs of Western Nevada now and into the future. I will be following up with local stakeholders in the coming weeks, one of them being Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, to share updates on transportation action items.
Immigration
This week, I meet with House leadership’s staff to discuss moving forward on immigration reform ahead of a March deadline that will end protections for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children. As you may know, I’m currently a cosponsor of the Recognizing America’s Children (RAC) Act, legislation which would allow a way for this certain population of undocumented immigrants to earn permanent legal status. My office communicates quite regularly with other cosponsors of the RAC Act, both Republican and Democrat, and we will continue meeting with constituents, local and national organizations, and other Members in the House to find solutions.
When it comes to this issue, I do not believe that waiting until March to take action on DACA is smart – particularly because the track record of the Committee with jurisdiction over immigration issues is not one of action. I am willing to team up with any Member of any party to bring this issue to a vote on the floor of the House this year.

Public Lands Update

On Wednesday, I joined the House Natural Resources Committee for an oversight hearing on state-based management of the greater sage grouse. Testifying before the Committee was The Honorable J.J. Giocoechea, DVM, Chairman of the Eureka County Commission Board. Click here or on the video above to hear my questioning.
Yucca Mountain
I expect legislation in regards to Yucca Mountain to come to the Floor sometime in November. My staff and I continue to evaluate the potential for amending any such bill under the best conditions for our state. In my opinion, ideal legislation would bring both scientific and commercial benefits to Nevada.

Tour Info
A friendly reminder that if you or your family is planning a visit to Washington this fall or in the near future to please be sure to fill out the tour request form on my website. We’re happy to show you around!
It’s also very important to note that is quite difficult to get tickets to tour the White House as slots are extremely limited. Tour requests should be made at least three months in advance and requests are considered on a first come first serve basis. However, the White House does not inform groups about the status of their tour requests until about two weeks before the requested tour date.
Check out the Visiting Washington, D.C. page of my website for more information. Also, please feel free to contact our tour coordinator Brandon Leggiero in my Washington office at 202-225-6155 with any questions or concerns.
